Sound System Outernational 5 - Sounds in the City is designed as a multi-layered event hosted at Università degli Studi di Napoli L’Orientale with local social movement partners. Over three days and interacting with the city of Naples in its rich academic, social, political and musical dimensions, the event includes talks, roundtables, exhibitions and film screenings. It also features sound system dances hosting local and international performers in some of the city’s most iconic social spaces.
The warm-up session is scheduled for Thursday, April 4th, with a panel to be hosted at Palazzo Giusso at 4pm (B on the map), and a photo exhibition plus musical session to be hosted at the Kestè Art Bar, located just out of Palazzo Giusso (the headquarter of the Orientale University of Naples), to run from 7pm to midnight.
The main conference entitled “Sounds in the City – Street Technology and Public Space” will be on Friday, April 5th, 9.30am to 6.30pm at Palazzo Du Mesnil (A on the attached map) with keynote lectures by Professor Louis Chude-Sokei (Boston University) and by Professor Sonjah Stanley-Niaah (University of the West Indies).
The day will continue with practice-based activities plus a dancehall session with local and international performers TBA to be hosted at Scugnizzo Liberato (C on the map), a grassroots community centre SSO is partnering with for this event, to run from 8,30 to 1am. Food and drinks will be available for sale.
The closing act on Saturday, April 6th will be hosted at CSOA Officina 99 (D on the map). The program will include a workshop, film screening and discussion from 5pm; plus a sound system session from 10 to 5am featuring national and international guests such as Mad Professor, Sister Aisha and more TBA. Food and drinks will be available for sale from 8pm.
The aim of the program is to provide the chance for foreign researchers to experience the local sound system scene in the grassroots venues that provide the infrastructure of the culture in Naples, stimulating a fruitful exchange between the academic community and local practitioners, which has always been SSO’s main purpose. These venues are run by activists on a community-based model without any institutional fundings or support. For this reason, the events will have a small admission fee (3 to 5 euros) in support of the venues and of the social activities they host.
Sound System Outernational 5 will also provide the occasion for the SSO international research network meeting and the opportunity for a short-term research project on the Napoli sound system scene.
Partners for the event include:
from the UK: Sound System Outernational (Goldsmiths, University of London); Sound System Culture / Let's Go Yorkshire and BASS (British Association of Sound Systems).
